My gums look bruised. Please help.?

Hello, I currently floss and brush every morning and everynight. I've never had a cavity in my life. On friday my teeth looked a little yellower than normal so I brushed for an extra minute on my front teeth (I had to take an important picture that day). I realise that was a very dumb thing to do. Anyways I woke up Saturday nothing looked wrong with my gums. Today (Sunday) I woke up and my gums of front teeth look a little bit purple. Anyways I'm freaking out, my friend told me I probably just bruised my gums from brushing too hard and it would be gone in a few days because the brusing is pretty minor. I was wondering if this does sound like my gums are bruised and what could I do to speed up the recovery process? Thanks.

Reply:Have you had a dental cleaning lately? The yellower appearance may be due to some tartar/calculus buildup on your teeth. This is when plaque hardens on your teeth and can only be removed at a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist. This can irritate the gums and cause them to become irritated and inflamed and bruised. You may have just brushed too hard, in which case it will heal on its own. However, if your dental cleanings are not up to date you should get them that way b/c the buildup can cause gum disease/bone loss which can lead to loosening of teeth.
