A few days ago, I noticed that the gum surrounding my last molar in the back is sore. It hurts when I brush my teeth (I use a battery operated toothbrush) and a little sensitive when I floss. It was not a gradual thing that happened. It was just sore one day. Just so you know, I am a huge oral care person. Brush 2x a day, floss everyday, I use Listerine in the morning and Act Flouride mouthwash at night. I also wear a splint at night to stop some mild grinding I do. So, this soreness is bothering me cause I do not know what to do to fix it. I went to the orthodontist yesterday to see if the splint was causing the soreness. He said it was doubtfull. He look at my gums and said "You probably burned your gums. Your gums look great, I can tell you are an excellent brusher" Then he got a peridontal tool to look harder. Yeah, that was uncomfortable. I started to bleed and he said, "Something is definetly wrong. you should not be bleeding" He was hurting my gums though
Problem with sore gums?
Well, your orthodontist said something was wrong, right? Did he have any idea what? Did he take an x-ray? Surely he didn't send you home without any idea, did he? If the gum is puffy, or has a blister-like lesion on it, then you have an abcess. The orthodontist should have spotted that right away, though. Have you gotten your wisdom teeth yet? Sometimes they will try to come in under your back molars and that will cause a lot of soreness, as the tooth is literally being pushed out. That requires oral surgery to remove it, but isn't as scary as it sounds.
If your orthodontist sent you home to wait and see what happens, I would contact your regular dentist if you have one. You should probably have a bite-wing x-ray to see what's going on in there.
Too vigorous brushing and flossing can injure your gums, but it doesn't sound like that's what this is. If you haven't gotten an answer, keep after it until you do, and in the meantime be very gentle brushing and flossing around that tooth. You can use Orajel for temporary relief, it works pretty well for a quick fix. Good luck!
