Gums are still hurting after a root & scale planing over a month ago?

I had a root %26amp; scale planing done over a month ago and my gums are still sore. The dentist put me on an antibiotic which didn't seem to help any. My gums are in such pain that I am feeling constant throbbing all the time. What could be wrong?

maybe you should get a second opinion, or at the very least...consult your medical Dr.
Reply:I suggest you go back to your dentist immediately. You may need some clyndomyacin(a strong antibiotic) to fight any infection. Or it could just be a piece of food stuck in there.
Reply:Go back to the dentist and tell him. It should have healed by now.
Reply:Hmmm...I'm a dental hygienist and I have never had a patient complain of pain after this long. I wouldn't say that was normal.

Throbbing? Wow, this would be difficult to answer without seeing your treatment notes and taking a look in your mouth. Have you tried warm salt water rinses? I tell all my patients to do that for a week after root planing.

Are your gums bleeding at all when you brush or floss?

Are you going through any hormonal changes (menopause, recent pregnancy)?

Are you diabetic?

That's about all I could think of that it could be.

I'm sorry you've had such a tough time. Your DDS gave you an antibiotic to clear up any infection...that would have taken away the pain. An infection wasn't the problem then. Maybe you just had a really rough deep cleaning. I'm just speculating though and I wouldn't put down another hygienist. I wasn't there so I don't know the situation.

If the gums are still bleeding, then all of the calculus may not have been effectively removed.

If you could be going through hormonal changes then that could explain it entirely.

Either way, use warm salt water rinses. Just a teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water and swish.

I hope this helps.
Reply:I agree with dental hygienist. She answered this well.
